WHEN THE ALMOND BLOSSOMS

And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “Jeremiah, what do you see?” And I said, “I see a rod of almond.”  Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it.”

Jeremiah 1: 11-12 RSV

In Hebrew there is a word play in this passage. The word for almond “shaked” has the same root as the verb “shoked”, here translated as “I am watching over…”. The verb ‘shoked’ carries the meaning to be watchful, wakeful and diligently watching over something. It has a stronger meaning than merely ‘watching over’. It is more active and has the connotation of diligent perseverance and determination. God is always diligently acting to bring his word to pass.

Thus the almond is a symbol of God’s faithfulness in fulfilling his word. The almond is the first tree to blossom in Israel, usually in February which is the coldest and wettest month of the year. It can even sometimes be seen flowering as snow falls here in the mountains of Judah. As I am writing the almonds are blossoming in the hills all around. They are a much loved sight, not the least because they are the first sign of the coming spring.

Almond blossoms in the snow in Jerusalem, 2 March 2014

It is encouraging that especially at the darkest, winter times in our lives we can remember the promise of the flowering almond. God is faithful and spring will come. Whatever we are going through it will come to an end at some time.

God spoke these words to the prophet Jeremiah just as he was about to send the nations of the north to invade Judah.

The word of the Lord came to me a second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, facing away from the north.”  Then the Lord said to me, “Out of the north evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.  For lo, I am calling all the tribes of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord; and they shall come and every one shall set his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls round about, and against all the cities of Judah.

Jeremiah 1: 13-15

From our point in history we know that everything that God prophesied concerning the coming invasion of Judah and their exile to Babylon came to pass. We know too that God’s promise of restoration also came to pass when the exiles returned from Babylon, and in our own day as well.

There is a sense today among Messianic believers in Israel that God is doing a new thing here. We are seeing an openness to Yeshua and the good news of salvation unlike anything we have seen before. It is exciting and not a little daunting too. Just as the almond blossoms just when things are darkest, so too will the ‘blossoming’ of the ‘good news’ be. Sometimes it is at the darkest times when men and women call out upon the name of God. You don’t have to look far to see that we are living in very dark times, a time of wars, famines and plagues. It is frightening but we can be assured of God’s promises, according to the testimony of the almond.

Almonds in flower at Ein Sataf, near Jerusalem

There is another reference to almonds in the book of Numbers. After the rebellion of the Korah against Moses and Aaron, the people of Israel still murmured against Moses because God’s wrath had broken out and destroyed the rebels. To settle the dispute God told Moses to instruct the leaders of each of the 12 tribes to bring a rod and Moses put them into the Tabernacle.

Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds.  Then Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord to all the children of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his rod.

Numbers 17: 8-9

Numbers 17:23 in Hebrew

Thus God used the almond to confirm the authority of Aaron as a priest of the house of Levi. It was clearly supernatural as the rod of Aaron sprouted, made buds , flowered and yielded ripe fruit in just one night, a process that usually takes around 6 months.

Almond blossoms, Ein Sataf, Feb 2013

This incident occurred, as I said, after the people had risen up in rebellion against the authority of Moses and Aaron. Immediately after the death of the leaders of the rebellion, the people continued to murmur against Moses and Aaron, and God was about to break out upon them to consume them. However Moses quickly instructed Aaron to make atonement for the people “for wrath has gone forth from the Lord and the plague has begun“, and indeed the plague had already begun among the people, and already 14,700 had died. Aaron made atonement and stood between the dead and the living and the plague was stopped.

41 But on the morrow all the congregation of the people of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, “You have killed the people of the Lord.” 42 And when the congregation had assembled against Moses and against Aaron, they turned toward the tent of meeting; and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the Lord appeared. 43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, 44 and the Lord said to Moses, 45 “Get away from the midst of this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.” And they fell on their faces. 46 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone forth from the Lord, the plague has begun.” 47 So Aaron took it as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague had already begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 48 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stopped. 49 Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died in the affair of Korah. 50 And Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, when the plague was stopped

Numbers 16 : 41-50

Today the world is facing the outbreak of a plague, covid-19 a virulent coronavirus, that could if it continues to spread could kill thousands, if not millions, and bring the world economy to its knees. The question is, will it bring the saints of God to their knees. Aaron made atonement by carrying the censer of incense amongst the people, standing between the living and the dead, and the plague was stopped. Today we do not have a Levitical priesthood nor do we usually make use of incense in this way, but in the book of Revelation we see that the angels of heaven mingle incense with the prayers of the saints.

And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer; and he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne;  and the smoke of the incense rose with the prayers of the saints from the hand of the angel before God.

Revelation 8: 3-4

I believe that the saints of God in the present time are a holy priesthood, with the calling and authority to stand between the people and the wrath of God.

To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen

Revelation 1: 5-6

Furthermore, God said

When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

II Chronicles 7:13-14

As priests of the living God, by right of the shed blood of Yeshua for atonement, those who are called God’s people have the calling and authority to pray for the people. If we are faithful to do so, perhaps the plague will be stopped and the lands healed. I am always reluctant to blame natural disasters on the wrath of God, but in the Bible we see that God often uses natural disasters to judge nations for their rebellion against him. On the other hand, God also uses natural disasters to remind people of His awesome power, His justice and righteousness, and of their own mortality. Pray that in these dark times people will call out and turn to their God and be healed, not only physically, but spiritually also.

WAS YESHUA RIGHT WING?

This brings me to comment on something that has been bothering me for a while and that is the question of our priorities as believers in Yeshua. This issue was highlighted for me by an article that appeared in a major online Israeli newspaper this week, entitled “Evangelicals to the Left, Iran to the Right” (1), a somewhat confusing title since the article was about the support of evangelical Christianity for the political right in the USA, and especially for President Trump. I feel the politicization of evangelical Christianity, especially as is occurring in the USA, is a big mistake. It is also rampant here in Israel, where a very large majority of Messianic believers support the right and Prime Minister Netanyahu. If your political leanings are towards the left you are almost considered heretic. If evangelical believers identify with the right they automatically alienate those who have different views. Although the individual is entitled to his or her political alliances, it is dangerous for the Christian or Messianic faith to be identified on political grounds. We need to be able to speak to all men and woman and to do this we need to be apolitical.

The same is true for those who fanatically support Israel no matter what Israel does. They automatically alienate Palestinians. We need to remember that the gospel is for all men equally. Yeshua was very careful not to get involved in political struggles during his time on Earth. He spoke out against injustice and the hypocrisy of the ruling authorities, and taught us to pray for our leaders, but he did not busy himself with wielding political power, but He kept his focus on his primary task, the salvation of individuals. I believe that this should be our focus also.

ITS STILL RAINING

We are all wondering when it is ever going to stop raining. It seems to have been raining nonstop all winter. This very unusual for us. Normally we will get a day or two of rain followed by several days of glorious sunshine. I cannot remember a winter as wet as this one. It is a bit depressing and we are all starting to grumble. However whenever I begin to complain I remember two things, the grumbling of the people of Israel as they travelled around the wilderness of Sinai and how it displeased God, bringing his judgement upon them, and secondly I think of the refugees, especially those from the Syrian province of Idlib, many of whom are sleeping out, under trees, without even a tent. It is very cold up there, with temperatures below zero at night, and many children and old people are dying from the cold. I cannot imagine what they are going through. I go to bed every night thanking God for the rain, since we need every drop, and also for my warm, dry, house and cosy bed. I have no right to complain and every reason to be very thankful. Still I am looking forward to spring if it is only to be able to get out and about to see the glorious spring flowers which already adorn the land. They will be especially luxuriant this year thanks to the rain.

ROCKETS FROM GAZA AGAIN

Over the last 48 hours or so we have had rain of another kind as some 100 rockets were fired into our southern communities by the Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Some 90% of these rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome system. There we no serious casualties but some property damage to a home and a children’s public playground. Southern residents from Ashkelon south were advised to stay in their bomb shelters. Schools and businesses were closed, many major roads blocked and the train service to the area halted, all causing much disruption to everyday life and the economy of the region. Yesterday the Islamic Jihad called a truce and an uneasy calm is being restored. Life in the south is slowly returning to ‘normal’, though it is truly far from what most of us would consider normal. The people in the south have lived for many years now with these repeating rounds of rocket fire, and incendiary and explosive balloons. They are calling for the government to take stronger action to stop it, but with no government currently any changes of policy are stalled even if the politicians had a better solution, which no one seems to have.

This barrage of rocket fire was the reaction of Islamic Jihad to the killing by the IDF of one of its operatives as he was laying a bomb by the border fence. According to IJ the IDF dishonored the body by scooping it up in a tractor scoop and carrying it into Israel, with the intention of using it as a bargaining chip to gain the release of Israelis, both living and dead, currently being held in the Strip. I can sort of understand the Islamic Jihad reaction. The sight of this tractor scooping up the dead body was somewhat shocking and it seems to me unnecessarily offensive.

As was said in the Haaretz newspaper (4) “Every Israeli ought to be worried by the video clip of an army bulldozer dragging the body of a Palestinian who was killed by Israeli soldiers in the Gaza Strip. This isn’t the behavior of an army that is strict about upholding purity of arms and claims to exemplify morality in combat.”

I am an Israeli and I love Israel and support her in every way I can, but that does not mean I support everything Israel does. True love is not blind. I don’t think this atrocity was in any way justified by the situation. May God forgive us and may we in future live up to our oft-repeated claim of having the most moral army on earth. Pray for us that we will not stoop to the level of our enemies, even during war, and that we may uphold God’s holiness as an example to the world.

I suppose I cannot finish this blog without a mention of the upcoming election, our third in a year! I feel that most Israelis think the situation is rather hopeless. Polls indicate that the outcome is likely to be similar to the last time around, with the Blue and White Party lead by Benny Gantz winning a few more seats than Netanyahu’s Likud Party, but neither party being able to garner enough seats to form a government. Will they agree to forming a broad-based coalition between Likud and the Blue and White Party? It seems unlikely after all the insults and mudslinging both sides have indulged in during their campaigns. Will we have a 4th round of elections? Well we will see next Tuesday. Please pray that somehow we can have a righteous and effective government put in place. That would take a mighty miracle, but this is the land of miracles after all.

THE MOUSE ROARED

The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let the God of my salvation be exalted.
It is God who avenges me,
And subdues the peoples under me;
He delivers me from my enemies.
You also lift me up above those who rise against me;
You have delivered me from the violent man.
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations,
And sing praises to Your name.

Great deliverance He gives to His king,
And shows mercy to His anointed,
To David and his descendants forevermore.

Psalm 18: 46-50

This week (1-7/09) God delivered Israel from the ‘violent man’, alias Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Seeking revenge for last week’s Israeli attack on a Iranian military installation in Syria, which was making precision guided systems for missiles. In the attack several Iranian military personnel and two senior Hezbollah operatives were killed. Immediately afterwards the ‘mouse roared’ threatening a massive attack on Israel in retaliation, an attack that would reach the center of the country. As the week passed Nasrallah’s roars faded to a squeak and by Sunday he was saying he intended only to ‘kill 2-3 Israeli soldiers’. Israel evacuated its bases within 5 km of the border, set up fake mannequins in vehicles, and banned travel on some roads. The civilian population was told to continue as normal. It also prepared for a massive attack on Hezbollah bases should there be any Israeli casualties.

On Sunday (1/09) about 4PM Hezbollah fired two anti-tank missiles at a vehicle containing 5 Israeli soldiers. By a miracle the missiles missed the vehicle hitting the road instead. Shrapnel pierced the tire of the vehicle but they were able to drive on to a safe position. For several hours there was a news blackout concerning the fate of the soldiers and the IDF carried out an evacuation of two soldiers to trick Nassrallah into thinking he had succeeded. Much later it was revealed that none of the soldiers had been even scratched.

https://www.timesofisrael.com/reports-hezbollah-nearly-missed-manned-armored-car-driving-in-breach-of-orders/

Hezbollah forces also fired on the Avivim Army Base but it had been evacuated ahead of the confrontation.

In retaliation Israel fired around 100 shells into Lebanon but most landed in open fields, setting crops on fire. No casualties have been reported. After a couple of hours all firing stopped and since then all has been quiet.

A few days later (3/09) Nasrallah announced that the confrontation at the border is over. He is claiming a victory boasting, ” Despite all the preparations and fake targets the enemy scattered along the border, we waited for our target and when it came, we hit it, without any doubt“(1). Apparently this was sufficient for him to ‘save face’. Of course he made his announcements from the safety of his mouse hole (underground bunker) in which he has been hiding for several years for fear of an assassination attempt.

https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5581480,00.html

Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had this to say about Nasrallah, ” The man in the bunker in Beirut knows exactly why he is in a bunker…We will continue to do everything necessary to keep Israel safe — at sea, on the ground and in the air — and we will also continue to work against the threat of the precise missiles” (1).

I may sound mocking but it would be a great mistake to underestimate the mouse in the hole. Nasrallah breathes threats against Israel every day and claims to have around 200,000 rockets and missiles that could hit every part of Israel. The problem is that these rockets and missiles are notoriously difficult to aim accurately. In past confrontations many have either been shot down by Israel’s anti- missile system or have landed harmlessly in open areas or in the sea. It is therefore of great concern to Israel that Iran is supplying high-precision missile guidance systems to Hezbollah. For this reason Israel is carrying out many missions to destroy the installations where Iran is building, storing these systems and training Hezbollah operatives in their use. Even since the confrontation on Sunday (1/09) the Israeli IDF has announced that it has carried out several such attacks in Lebanon, Syria and even Iraq. Israel must do everything it can to prevent Hezbollah obtaining this technology which would enable them to pinpoint with great accuracy key military and civilian targets. For now, Hezbollah is weak having lost a great number of personnel during the Syrian Civil War, and is also facing some financial issues. There are also signs that Hezbollah is facing growing criticism in Lebanon itself – see the cartoon above, for example (2) . The Lebanese people do not want to be drawn into another war with Israel. Should Hezbollah however recover its confidence, I have no doubt it will attempt to destroy Israel as Nasrallah threatens nearly every day.

Why do the nations rage,
And the people plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth set themselves,
And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,
“Let us break Their bonds in pieces
And cast away Their cords from us.”

He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
“Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”

7 “I will declare the decree:
The Lord has said to Me,
‘You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.
Ask of Me, and I will give You
The nations for Your inheritance,
And the ends of the earth for Your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron;
You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’ ”

10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the Lord with fear,
And rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

GAZA

The other day I was idly rereading some of my earliest blog posts written during the last Gaza war in 2008. I was amazed how similar they were to my more recent posts. Nothing significant has changed. They shoot at us and we retaliate. A ceasefire is announced and a tense calm exists until the next time they shoot at us. Round and round it goes with no end in sight. It is a great weariness for all.

Once more, the Friday night of 6/09 the sirens sounded in some of Israel’s southern communities, Sderot, Ibim, and Kibbutz Or HaNer as five rockets were fired from Gaza. One landed near the town of Sderot, setting fire to brush. Two women were treated for shock. This followed the weekly border riots in which two Palestinian minors were killed by IDF fire. The protests had been especially violent that week with around 6,000 Palestinians hurling a large number of explosive devices, grenades and firebombs at IDF troops guarding the border. The border fence was also damaged. In addition to the two dead, some 70 protesters were injured, 38 of them by live fire, according to the report of medical officers in Gaza.

https://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-5581480,00.html

Later that Friday night the IDF attacked several Hamas targets and the next day a Hamas cell launched an armed drone attacked an IDF vehicle, prompting an Israeli retaliation in which the IDF attacked  naval combat equipment belonging to the terrorist group and two military centers for Hamas’s aerial systems in airstrikes in the northern and central Strip (3).

Later Friday night Israeli aircraft and a tank attacked several Hamas targets in Gaza. This morning a drone, piloted by a Hamas cell, dropped explosives over the Israeli border, damaging an IDF vehicle but causing no casualties. Soldiers fired at the cell but there have been no reports of casualties (4).

On Tuesday of this week (10/11) the sirens sounded again, this time as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was giving an election speech in Ashdod. He was ushered off the stage by his security detail. Netanyahu said to the audience ” We have a code red warning, leave quietly” and then realizing this was impossible he turned an asked his guards “Where should they go?” This was all being broadcast live.. Almost immediately his election campaign people realized how damaging this incident would be to his campaign and deleted the video – but too late! You can see the video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D32IBCyC01Q

In this attack two medium range missiles were fired from the Gaza strip towards the Israeli cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod. One missile was shot down by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system and the other landed in the sea. There were no casualties.

The next day, on Wednesday, sirens again sounded in some southern communities, this time while children were still in school. Three launches were detected and one of the rockets landed in the yard of a home causing some damage to the house. Thankfully the family were not at home at the time and no injuries were reported.

This last Friday also marked the 73rd week of the Gaza border riots, the so-called Palestinian “March of Return”. This too is a great weariness, so much so that it barely gets a mention on our local news these days.

With elections looming, in just 3 days time, the inability of the Netanyahu government to resolve the Gaza issue is a primary election issue. On Thursday, Netanyahu announced that ” it looks like there will be no other choice but to embark on a wide-scale campaign in Gaza” (5). On Friday, returning from meetings in Russia with Putin and the Russian Defense Minister, Shoigu, Netanyahu announced that such an attack “could happen at any moment” leading to some speculation it could happen even before Tuesday’s election. I doubt that Netanyahu would risk that but he is desperately trying to garner election points at this stage. We can only pray that God’s will will prevail at this time.

WEST BANK ANNEXATION?

On Tuesday afternoon our TV stations announced that Netanyahu would make “an important announcement at 5PM”. At 5PM this was postponed to 6PM, but at that time he came on air, to announce that if elected again as PM he will immedieately annex the Jordan Valley. You can see the whole speech, with English translation, by clicking on the link below:

As I watched this I was shocked by what appeared to me to be a brazen misuse of his position to score pre-election points. The Election Committee tried to shut this broadcast down and some, but not all networks did stop showing the speech. You can see the whole speech, with English translation, by clicking on the link below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMWep1sV940&t=12s

It transpires that prior to Netanyahu’s speech he had intended to actually announce the annexation, as opposed to just announcing his intention to do so, if elected. He was dissuaded from doing so by senior security officials. What is more, the Election Committee has since fined Netanyahu and his Likud Party 30,000 shekels for violating the election law for making election campaign messages during a live broadcast(6).

ELECTIONS

There are, as I already said, only 3 days to go before the elections. After the failed election earlier in the year, the campaigns this time have been exceptionally dirty with much name calling, mudslinging and underhand, devious tricks on all sides. As things stand polls are indicating the likelihood of yet another stalemate. I am glad I do not have the right to vote as I would not have a clue who to vote for. They all have good policies and bad. I thank God I have something much more powerful that a ballot slip. I have prayer. I am simply praying that God’s Will will be done. I would like to hope for righteous and just, and wise government but I admit I don’t believe there are really any options for such a government to be elected. I do know however that ultimately God is in control although for a time Satan, the “Prince of the Power of the Air” (Ephesians 2:2), is wrecking havoc on Earth. Soon, I hope and pray, Satan’s time will come to an end and Messiah, Yeshua, will establish his throne on Mt Zion. Until this is fulfilled we need to be much in prayer for our leaders.

TERROR STRIKES AGAIN

There have been a number of terror attacks recently. The most serious occurred at Ein Bubin Spring, near the settlement of Dolev, east of Modiin. A father and his two teenage children went out for an early morning hike and as they approached the gate to the spring an explosive device detonated in their path, killing Rina Shnerb (17), and seriously injuring her brother Dvir (19). The father was lightly injured too. In a testimony to the resilience of the Israeli spirit and just hours after his release from hospital this week, Dvir received his certificate qualifying him as a medic for the Magen David Adom service, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross.

BACK TO SCHOOL

On September 1st some 2,300,000 Israeli school children returned to school after the long, two-month, summer vacation. For me this marks the end of summer even though the weather denies it. It is still reaching more than 30 degrees pretty much every day but we have had one or two days lately that didn’t. There is a stirring in the air and a freshness in the breeze which heralds the coming of fall/autumn. Another herald of the coming change is the flowering of the sea squill, a plant recognized in Israel as the first harbinger of fall. They are already flowering. This is a reminder of the faithfulness of our God, who sustains the times and the seasons. Praise His Name!

Paul and Barnabus proclaimed:

Nevertheless He (God) did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.”

JERUSALEM DAY

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
May they prosper who love you.
 Peace be within your walls,
Prosperity within your palaces.”
For the sake of my brethren and companions,
I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
Because of the house of the Lord our God
I will seek your good

Psalm 122: 6-9

Yesterday, 02/06/19, was Jerusalem Day, a national holiday commemorating the reunification of the City during the 1967 War, 52 years ago. For Jews it is a time of great joy but for Palestinians, who commemorated this event as Quds Day last Friday, it is a day of anger and sorrow.

The Temple Mount 2012

This year, Jerusalem Day fell during the final days of the Muslim Ramadan Fast which will end on the evening of Tuesday, 5th June. Under an arrangement in place since 1967 non-Muslims are allowed to visit the Temple Mount Compound but not pray there. In spite of a Rabbinic ruling forbidding Jews to go onto the Temple Mount Compound, lest they inadvertently tread in the site of the Holy of Holies, small, closely supervised groups of Jews sometimes visit during limited hours. They are taken on a predetermined route and are forbidden to openly pray or display any national or religious symbols. In past years Jews have been forbidden to go up to the Temple Compound during the last ten days of Ramadan, but this year, following a High Court of Justice ruling, the Compound was opened to Jewish visitors. Yesterday morning hundreds of Jewish activists were permitted to go up onto the Temple Mount to pray and, needless to say, this provocative move resulted in rioting during which hundreds of Muslims threw objects at Israeli security personnel (1).

Most Jews do not go up onto the Temple Mount Compound on Jerusalem Day but instead many gather at the Western Wall to pray.

There were many other events and activities that took place over this day. The most sensitive one was the Flag March in the afternoon, when thousands of mostly religious youth, marched through the city dancing under Israeli flags. This event has sparked violence in previous years because its route passes through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, but thankfully this year there was no violence.

In the evening, the Jerusalem Day state ceremony took place on Ammunition Hill with the President, Reuven Rivlin, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and the Mayor of Jerusalem, Moshe Leon, in attendance. Later a “White Night” outdoor concert took place in Sacher Park with thousands of mainly young people in attendance. Needless to say all these events, and the many others where people are gathering, constitute a great security risk and police were present in large numbers throughout the city. I am glad to say that the day passed without any serious incidents of violence.

Quds Day

Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem and translates as “the Holy (place)”. Qud’s Day commemorates the fall of East Jerusalem into Israeli hands during the 1967 war. It is celebrated on the last Friday of the month of Ramadan. This last Friday thousands of Palestinians and their supporters gathered in rallies across the Middle East and Europe. In Teheran in Iran, thousands of demonstrators set fire to Israeli and American flags, burned effigies of Trump and mocked his proposed peace plan. Similar rallies took place in at least 950 towns and cities across Iran (3).

Terrorist attack in Jerusalem

Friday also saw a terrorist attack two Israelis, a 47-year -old man and a 16-year-old boy, with a knife, wounding them both. One of the victims sustained several stab wounds in his back and neck and he is still in serious condition. The terrorist, a 19-year-old Palestinian man from the West Bank was shot dead by a police officer thus preventing additional attacks.

Rocket attack from Syria and Israel’s response

On Saturday several rockets were fired from Syria towards the Golan Heights targetting Israel’s ski resort on Mt Hermon. One rocket landed in Syrian territory and at least one other landed in an open area in Israel causing no damage or injuries. On Saturday night Israel responded by attacking air defense units, artillery batteries, observation and intelligence posts in Syria (4). According to YnetNews, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Israeli warplanes struck positions and an arms depot of Iranian troops and Lebanon’s Hezbollah fighters (4). Three Syrian soldiers and 7 ‘foreign nationals’ ( Hezbollah and/or Iranian?) were killed (4).

Last night the Israeli Airforce again attacked military targets at the T-4 Airbase in central Syria killing 3 Syrian soldiers and two others. Both these attacks took place after a Boeing 747 belonging to the Iranian airline, Fars Air Qeshm, and used by the country’s Revolutionary Guards to smuggle weapons to their allies in Syria, landed in the T-4 airbase. It took off three hours later after unloading cargo (5).

Gaza

On Thursday last week, Hamas leader, Yahya Sinwar, speaking at a conference calling for an Intifada (Uprising) on Qud’s Day, boasted of his organization’s relationship with Iran and threatened to pulverize Tel Aviv in the next round of hostilities. He said, “ In the next confrontation with Israel, we will pulverize Tel Aviv with double the force than during Operation Protective Edge“, referring to the 2014 confrontation in which a number of missiles were fired at Tel Aviv.

He also said, ” We will improve our weapons and combat capability until our goal is achieved. In the last confrontation (in May this year) we used some missiles that came from Iran, while others were manufactured locally.” He said that during this latest flare up “Beer-Sheva was attacked with a grad rocket that weighs 40kg (88 pounds), Tel Aviv was struck with an Iranian Fajr-5 rocket and with locally manufactured rockets.” Continuing he said. “Without the Iranian support, the Palestinian resistance would not have achieved these capabilities. Our nation has given up on us in the most difficult of times but Iran continues to help with knowledge and equipment. (6) ”

The following day Islamic Jihad chief, Ziad Nakhaleh, claimed that in the last round of fighting his group and Hamas restrained themselves only firing about 700 rockets into Israel, and held back from attacking some cities in central Israel. He warned that in the next round they would “not only fire at Tel Aviv, but at all the cities, whatever may happen” and claimed that they could sustain a rate of fire of 1000 rockets per day for a full month (7).

Meanwhile, daily protests occur along the Gaza border unabated and at least 35 fires have been ignited in Israel as a result of incendiary devices (according to data from the Israel Fire and Rescue Services) since May 6th when the ceasefire came into effect after the last round of fighting.

As Trump prepares to unveil his Peace Plan for the Palestinian-Israel conflict, Hamas leader Yahyah Sinwar, had this to say,

We are against the deals aimed at ending the conflict in the region and integrating the so-called Israel in it,” Sinwar said. “The people of Gaza declare that this conflict will only be over when the occupation ends, and we’ll be able to return to Jerusalem and enter the liberated Al-Aqsa Mosque. This is the mindset that was passed down to us with our mothers’ milk.” (8)

With ‘partners for peace’ like that – I suspect the Peace Plan will be still-born!

Netanyahu fails to form a government

Israel is now headed for new elections to take place in September, after Netanyahu failed to garner a coalition of the required 61 seats to form a government. He remains in office as interim Prime Minister until the new elections are held. The political scene is a fiasco and what will happen in September is anyone’s guess. What we really need is the true King of Israel, Yeshua (Jesus), to come and sort out this mess.

O Jerusalem

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!  See! Your house is left to you desolate;  for I say to you, you shall see Me no more till you say, ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’

Matthew 23: 37-39

This week I was sadly reminded of this passage in which Yeshua says he will not come until Jerusalem’s inhabitants are ready to welcome those who come in His Name. On Wednesday and Thursday nights last week the Messianic Alliance and the Yuval School for Music put on a concert featuring some of the best newly written worship songs. I attended the first concert on Wednesday night and was blessed by the richness and beauty of the new songs. It blows me away how the Body of Yeshua here has produced not only a large number of wonderful worships songs but has developed a unique Hebraic sound. Five CD/DVDs have already been produced in earlier years and this year’s performance will also soon come out on CD/DVD. You can hear the 5th concert on this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chG6xRsX7ns&list=PL8WLiRY2TG0HQ3x-ry3qB_1WwUp6V_ggL This CD is available for purchase on http://www.mjai.co.il/products

As I entered the auditorium for the Wednesday concert, I noticed a number of ultra-orthodox men watching us carefully. The next night, at the Thursday performances, a large number of ultra-orthodox men and boys tried to physically stop people entering the auditorium and it all became rather ugly. One eyewitness wrote thus:

…there were riots and problems caused by (the) Lehava* organization… and caused a lot of scare (sic) and damage to people (even people just passing by), and even a hospital run, as someone (not even a believer) got severely hurt and was bleeding from his ear. Kids were crying, mothers and old people were terrified, and our men, though kept resisting themselves from hitting someone there, got hurt as well…. They even had kids there participating, cursing us, getting close to us ladies and screaming that we’re touching them etc. Even their leader, who actually tried to keep them intact couldn’t control them. They seemed possessed (!). The police arrived at some point, … and even they could not take control of the demonstrators. After about 2 hours someone (maybe the police, maybe the demonstrators) sprayed the whole area with pepper spray… and some of us inhaled it, and suffocated and threw up…

I can only echo Jesus’ words with sorrow,

*The Lehava Organization for the Prevention of Assimilation in the Holy Land is not a mainstream ultra-orthodox group but rather an extreme far-right organization that opposes any kind of relationships between Jews and non-Jews, especially Arabs and Christians, and has been responsible for many demonstrations and actions against individuals and groups, including the torching of the Yad B’Yad (Hand in Hand) bilingual school for Jewish and Arab education in Jerusalem. They have been labeled by some as a terror organization.

Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.  Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

Matthew 23: 27-28

Pray for these people who have a zeal for God but the veil has not yet been lifted from their minds (see II Corinthians 3:15-16). Pray that one day soon even they will cry out

“Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the LORD”.
